Tamaqua Meeting to Address Sludge Dumping

The Tamaqua Borough Council will hold a meeting on Wednesday, July 26 to discuss the dangers of land application of sewage sludge. It will take place at 7 p.m. at at the Mohn Building, Tamaqua Community Center, at the rear of 229 Center St.

The meeting will offer information about state preemptions of local regulations as well as details about a new ordinance under consideration by the council. The ordinance aims to end sludge hauling and dumping by corporations operating under state permit.

Speakers at the event will include Russell and Antoinette Pennock from Berks County, whose son Daniel died after being exposed to land applied sewage sludge. They will discuss the role of the state Department of Environmental Protection and the courts in their case.

Last month the Schuylkill Township supervisors held a similar forum to discuss a proposed plan to dump Philadelphia sewage sludge along the north side of Route 209 from Tamaqua to Tuscarora. That plan is being pushed by a subsidiary of Reading Anthracite, a major local polluter.
